About Me

Tarcila Neves is a mixed Afro-Indigenous Brazilian artist, curator, and educator whose journey in art began in the Gueto district of Rio de Janeiro, where creativity became a way to navigate the challenges of growing up in a marginalized community. Tarcila’s work focuses on blending traditional and digital art, ensuring accessibility through the use of augmented reality, animation, and audio descriptions.

Her educational path includes advanced studies at Vancouver Film School in Concept Art, BCIT in Media and Business, and Imaginism School in Digital Art. This diverse background has allowed her to develop a unique approach that merges storytelling, cultural sensitivity, and community engagement.

As part of ArtNest Collab, Tarcila leads the curation of inclusive art installations while guiding both emerging and established artists in the creation of immersive, collaborative projects. She also facilitates workshops that empower underrepresented communities to co-create and engage with art, breaking down barriers to participation and fostering inclusivity.

Through her role as an artist, curator, and educator, Tarcila strives to make art a democratic, shared experience where everyone can learn, create, and have their voice reflected in the work.

Art Statement

At the core of my work is a commitment to humanism, inclusivity, and sustainability. I believe art should serve as a bridge that connects people, reflecting shared human experiences while also being mindful of the planet we inhabit. Growing up in a community marked by inequality, I’m driven by the need to create spaces where marginalized voices are heard and represented.

Through traditional and digital techniques, I incorporate augmented reality, animation, and audio descriptions to ensure my art is accessible to all, including those with visual impairments. Sustainability is also central to my practice—I strive to use environmentally conscious materials and methods in both the creation and curation of my work.

For me, art must be democratic and open to everyone. By engaging communities in workshops and collaborative projects, I aim to empower participants to co-create and embed their stories into the final work. Art has the power to connect, inspire, and create change, and when it is accessible, inclusive, and sustainable, it becomes a force for positive transformation.

"Art is a message and should be a democratic, sustainable space where underrepresented communities can collaborate, learn, and create together." - Tarcila Neves
